New Beginnings

We are excited to announce that Igalia has come to an agreement with the workers of Bocoup to join forces and purchase the Bocoup brand. The workers formerly known as Bocoup are proud of what we’ve achieved together, grateful to our predecessors, and looking forward to what the future holds.

So no, we won’t be printing any more Bocoup t-shirts (collectors out there will want to put theirs under glass), but Bocoup’s name, brand, and legacy will indeed live on. First of all, none of us will be de-stickering the streets of Boston. More importantly, under Igalia’s stewardship, this website will continue to catalog the incredible work that’s happened here since 2009.

We’d like to take a moment to highlight the company’s achievements since converting to a worker-owned cooperative. During that time, we delivered high-quality consulting work to the likes of Google and Meta. We shepherded the ARIA-AT project (a years-long collaboration between Bocoup and Meta) to maturation into a fully volunteer-run operation. We mentored an intern from the American Association of People with Disabilities. And most adventurously, we presented on the interoperability of assistive technology at conferences in Spain, Japan, and the US. Not bad for 18 months!

We’re thrilled to continue to espouse the principles of open systems and worker ownership in new realms. We owe thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years. From the hundreds of folks who have contributed their time and their labor, to the thousands who have attended meetups, asked good questions, and reviewed our patches: there wouldn’t be much to celebrate today if it wasn’t for you.

If you would like to hire Igalia’s services, contact Igalia. A few of Bocoup’s worker-owners and partners have moved on to other projects, and we wish them well. You can reach Chris Cuellar at hello@fideo.studio and Howard Edwards at howard@howardedwards.me.

You can also read more at Igalia’s own announcement.
